General Pest Control
Seasonal home pest control in Detroit, built around the autumn move indoors and the warm-weather return of ants, wasps and mosquitoes.
Mice in a basement wall, boxelder bugs on the sunny side of the house, a wasp nest in the soffit: call (855) 974-4733 any time. A local technician comes out, and you confirm the price before any treatment starts.
Fastest: call (855) 974-4733. Or send this and we call you back.
Detroit's long freeze, the spring thaw and warm summers decide which pests are moving indoors or back outside from week to week.
Detroit Pest Control connects homes and businesses in Detroit, the rest of Wayne County and the Oakland and Macomb County suburbs with a local pest control technician. Phones are answered 24/7, same-day visits are offered when a technician is free, and the price is confirmed with you before any treatment begins. Mice, rats, roaches, bed bugs, termites, ants and wasps are all covered.
Pest pressure in Detroit follows the calendar differently than it does in the South. For much of the year the worst of it is outside, then the first cool nights of September and October start pushing mice into basements and wall cavities, and boxelder bugs and cluster flies collect on the warm south and west walls looking for a crack. They spend the winter inside your walls and attic, and they become noticeable again when the weather turns. Roaches and bed bugs in heated apartment buildings never really take a season off.
Detroit Pest Control handles pest control across the city's older housing: brick bungalows with full basements and old coal chutes, two-family flats, mansion conversions, and the restaurant rows and apartment blocks that call for commercial pest control. Coal chutes, sill gaps, pipe penetrations and cracked slab aprons are how pests get into older Detroit houses, so closing those entries is part of the plan.
Visits are timed to the Detroit calendar: sealing before the first frosts, termite and ant checks in spring, wasp and mosquito work in the warm months.

Call (855) 974-4733 for anything urgent, or use the form for something that can wait a day. Say what you saw, where in the building you saw it, and your street or ZIP.
We connect you with a technician who works near your part of the metro area. If one is free, a same-day visit is offered; otherwise you get the next realistic time.
The technician looks for the pest, the nest or harborage and the way it is getting in, then explains the options in plain language, including what you can do yourself.
You confirm the price before any treatment starts. Where the problem is an open gap or a damp spot, you are told so, because sealing and moisture fixes decide how long the result lasts.
In Detroit, the pests people call about most are mice and rats moving into basements as the weather cools, cockroaches and bed bugs in older multifamily buildings, ants in spring, and fall invaders such as boxelder bugs. Termites, mosquitoes and wasps also turn up, mostly in the warm months. Which one you have depends on the building, the block and the season.
Many of these give early warning, and catching them early usually means a smaller job. Use this list as a starting point, and call if you are not sure what you are looking at. A photo of the pest or the droppings helps the technician plan before arriving.
Winter pushes pests inside rather than killing them off. Detroit's January highs average about 32 degrees and lows about 19, so mice, rats and fall invaders look for warm basements, walls and attics from autumn on. They overwinter indoors, and the warmer months bring ants, termites, mosquitoes and wasps back outside.
Detroit also sees about 40.7 inches of snow in a typical year, most of it from December through February, with July highs near 84 degrees. That swing matters for pest work. The cold months are when sealing and exclusion pay off, because a mouse that cannot get in cannot overwinter in your wall. The warm months are when you treat the pests that live outdoors.
Freezing and thawing repeatedly can also open cracks at foundations and slab aprons, which is one reason a technician checks the outside of the house as carefully as the inside. The table below is a rough guide to the year, and the Detroit pest calendar goes month by month.
| Season | Weather | Pests to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Winter (Dec to Feb) | Cold and snowy; January lows near the high teens | Mice and rats living indoors, German cockroaches and bed bugs in heated multifamily buildings, overwintered boxelder bugs and cluster flies waking on warm days in a heated attic |
| Spring (Mar to May) | Thaw, then warmer, with plenty of rain | Termite swarms on warm, rainy days from about March, ants starting to forage, winter-entered mice breeding, overwintering insects trying to leave, carpenter ants in damp wood |
| Summer (Jun to Aug) | Warm, with July highs near 84 degrees | Mosquitoes building toward August, wasp nests growing, yellowjackets at their most aggressive late in the season |
| Fall (Sep to Nov) | Cooling nights, first frosts in October | Mice and rats moving in, boxelder bugs, cluster flies and lady beetles on south and west walls, wasps still active until the cold arrives |
Older Detroit houses have many small entries: coal chutes, gaps where pipes and wires pass through block or rubble foundations, cracked slab aprons and loose sill plates. A mouse needs only a small opening. Sealing those gaps is usually what separates a one-time cleanup from a problem that comes back every fall.
Much of the city's housing was built in the early twentieth century, with full basements and masonry foundations. Those foundations are sturdy, but they age: mortar cracks, utility lines get re-cut over decades, and an old coal chute can sit behind a wooden panel that has not been looked at in years. The usual approach is to trap what is inside, find the entries and close them with materials a rodent cannot chew through. That is covered in rodent exclusion for basements and coal chutes.
Rats are a separate conversation. Orkin's 2025 list of the rattiest cities, based on its own residential rat calls, put Detroit seventh, and one local pest firm has reported rising rat calls across the metro area. Residents also say rats scatter into neighboring houses when nearby buildings come down. Those are reports, not proof of cause, but they are why Norway rat control here looks at the whole lot and the block, not only the basement.
Keep it simple: note where you saw the pest, take a photo if you can, and leave the area undisturbed. Do not set off foggers or pour pesticide into wall gaps, which can scatter roaches or bed bugs into more rooms. Clear access to the basement, attic or under-sink area the technician will need to reach.
For rodents, put food in sealed containers and note where you hear or see activity. For bed bugs, do not move bedding or furniture to another room, because that spreads them. For stinging insects, stay away from the nest and keep children and pets clear until a technician has looked at it.
If you rent, mention it when you call. In multifamily buildings, roaches, mice and bed bugs often travel through shared walls and pipes, so the technician may want to know about neighboring units and who else should be told.

A Detroit pest control quote depends mainly on the pest, the size and layout of the building, how easy the basement, attic or yard is to reach, how many visits the problem needs, and whether you want a one-time job or a plan.
In Detroit, mice typically start moving indoors in September and October as nights cool, and entry continues through November's first snow.
Boxelder bugs, cluster flies and Asian lady beetles gather on the south and west walls of Michigan buildings in fall because those walls are the warmest.
Yes. Phones are answered 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays. Urgent problems, such as a nest by a doorway or an animal in the attic, are scheduled as soon as a technician is free. No. The technician inspects, explains what was found and what treatment makes sense, and the price is confirmed with you before any treatment starts. If the price is not what you expected, you can ask questions or say no. See the pricing page for what drives a quote.
Usually as nights cool, from about September, and entry continues through the first frosts in October and November. Older brick and block homes give them many small gaps to use. Sealing in early autumn is easier than chasing mice through a wall in January. See our guide to when mice come in.
MSU Extension describes boxelder bugs, Asian lady beetles and cluster flies as fall invaders that gather on the warmest, south and west, sides of buildings and crawl into cracks around windows, siding and soffit vents. Sealing cracks with caulk helps. Read more in our south wall guide.
Yes. Flats, apartment buildings, restaurants, shops and offices can all be scheduled through commercial pest control. In shared buildings, roaches, mice and bed bugs move through walls and pipes, so the visit usually looks at more than one unit.
